Complimentary Therapeutic Speech Consultation
The first step to putting your child on the right path to speech improvement is to book a free initial speech consultation in Central, NJ, with Speech Academy LLC- Plainsboro. Our speech pathologists can assess your child’s situation and find the best way to communicate to meet their needs. The consultation could include signs, symbols, gestures and other forms of assisted communication. Based on our initial meeting and evaluation we can assess your child’s level of ability and design a program to help them develop their skills.
Your child’s speech consultation will be the deciding factor as to whether or not they need a further speech evaluation. We begin with a parent interview as you are the best expert on your child’s history and skills. We use the beginning of the consultation session to get to know more about your child’s history and your concerns. The information that you provide is essential for the therapist’s understanding of your child and their current strengths and needs regarding their communication skills. This initial screening is a great tool to determine if your child needs a full speech evaluation.
Effective Speech Evaluation
After your free preliminary speech consultation, we can schedule an evaluation at the speech therapist’s discretion. Our assessments will involve formal and informal methods of testing. Informal testing may often look more like play and casual conversation as a way for our speech therapists to get to know your child in a setting that is comfortable. We take this time to learn more about how your child communicates in real-life situations.
Formal testing is a more structured method of evaluation that may involve your child doing things such as pointing to pictures in a manual, naming items or answering questions. During speech evaluation, we cover word discrimination, reading comprehension, in addition to the speed of reading for older children. We also pay particular attention to voice quality, check nasality, along with resonance and flow of speech.
During this evaluation, we recommend that parents sit back and observe the evaluation quietly unless asked to participate by the speech therapist conducting the assessment.
